Exploring nature

valigia valle d'itriaTrekking routes in Valle d’Itria are an intimate journey in the “trulli” land, among dry stone walls, wine yards, olive trees, orchards and almond trees. There are hiking routes of different length, “customized” according to type of training level, time at disposal, personal needs. There are many opportunities about it, you can choose. Walking along the Ciclovia of Acquedotto Pugliese (= cycle road of Apulian Aquedut) is viable also by bike and it links many towns and lands, such as Cisternino, Martina Franca, a country side of Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica, getting across beautiful landscapes and typical residences. Trekking across millenary olive trees, along a paths linking Ostuni and Cisternino, presents also an unexpected wood, so silent and charming. There is also a trekking route on Canale di Pirro: it leads you to one of the most panoramic point in Valle d’Itria, the Bridge of Cecca, almost 400 m. high near Monte Tonda.

What packing into suitcase…

A sporty outfit, of course. Short pants – comfortable for trekking -, cotton t-shirts and a windproof jacket to wear in the early morning or at sunset, evening. You must have a hat for sunniest hours and a practical backpack where including mobile, water bottle and energy bars.

Relax on shore

On the other hand, it is true take you can take only twenty minutes to get the nearest sea, with many opportunities to enjoy the sea, swimming, relax or exploring as you prefer. You can find out both wild bays and equipped beaches, both white sand and rock-cliffs. In this case, we suggest you the coastline between San Vito – a small hamlet near Polignano a Mare – and the Torre Guaceto Protected Area, that can offer you a wide selection of different experience to enjoy the sea, some of them pet-friendly also. Consider the following stops: Porto Cavallo (much frequented by families with kids); Egnazia (standing on an old Messapic town where you can visit the archaeological remains); Savelletri and Torre Canne (long shores where are both free areas and equipped beaches); Cala San Giovanni (a special place where there is the “Laura Basiliana”, old caves where Basilian monks lived. Consider only relaxing outfits, that allow you to perfectly enjoy the kind of “sea-experience” you would like. Light fabrics such as cotton, trendy summery colors like blue with white and red. Rubber sandals are perfect. Do not miss a beach towel and many, many beachwear items.

The list of Valle d’Itria’s towns is full of names, some famous and others less well known, all iconic of this typical land: most of them are outside of common itineraries and for this reason keeps the authenticity of popular culture and charming. Visiting Valle d’Itria, you must get Martina Franca: elegant and classy, it is meeting and fusion point of religious baroque and noble one. In its historical part, there are Medieval elements and nineteenth-century buildings, a triumph of baroque and “barocchetto” (=a diminutive of classic baroque), churches, palaces, cloisters and architectural elements. A few kilometers there is Locorotondo. Its essence is in three elements: white, flowers, “cummerse” (= typical vaults, with sloping roofs). Included in “Borghi più belli d’Italia”, the list of the most beautiful Italian small town, Locorotondo is famous for its little concentric streets, its houses with the typical vaults so called “cummerse” made by “chiancarelle” (=limestone slabs). Finally, as third point of this imaginary triangle, there is Cisternino. Smart, romantic, full of arches. White will flood your eyes: enjoy also the unexpected blue colored details, among doors and windows.
